Medical Devices with Different Types and Application

Medical device is like any apparatus, instrument, machine, implement, appliance, implant, reagent for in vitro use, software, material or alternative similar or related article, meant by the manufacturer to be used, alone or together.Medical devices range from a bandage that you would put on a scratch to high risk products such as pacemakers that are planted in your body. 

Different Examples of Medical Devices Include:

  • Blood pressure monitors
  • Breast implants 
  • Catheters
  • lubricating eye drops
  • MRI scanners 
  • Orthodontics - braces, fillings 
  • Syringes 
  • Tongue depressors

Most often medical devices used with application such as diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, treatment of handicap. They are designed to save and improve lives of people around the world. Medical devices are different types, some devices are used for monitoring and other devices are used for diagnostics purposes. In both the cases they are useful and being used for the urgent medical need. It is, simply defined, any item used to diagnose, treat, or prevent disease, injury, or any other condition that is not a drug, biologic, or food.

To Use Medical Devices Safely:

  • Know how your device works. Keep instructions close by 
  • Understand and properly respond to device alarms
  • Have a back-up plan and supplies in the event of an emergency 
  • Keep emergency numbers available and update them as required 
  • Educate your family and caregivers about your device


There are Different Types of Medical Devices Such As:


Active medical device, Any medical device the operation of  which depends on a source of electrical energy or any source of power rather than directly generated by the human body or gravity and which acts by changing this energy.Medical device planning for its functioning on a source of electrical energy or any source of power apart from that directly generated by the physical body or gravity. E.g. Ultrasound scanner, lungs ventilator, X-ray machines, pacemaker, phototherapy etc.

Non-active Medical Device,Medical devices, without an integral power source. E.g. cardiovascular stents, cardiac valves, surgical equipment, injection, infusion, dialysis etc. 

The Medical Devices has a very wide scope and it is important to realize that the meant purpose and also the way a product is marketed will cause them to be covered or excluded.
