Work-life balance may be a daily effort to make time for family, friends, community participation, spirituality, personal growth, self-care, and alternative personal activities, in addition to the demands of the workplace.

The pursuit of work balance reduces the stress employees’ experience. The Six Components of Work-Life Balance:

1.   Self-Management: It is the recognition that effectively using the spaces in our lives is vital, and that available resources, time, and life are finite.
2.  Time Management: Time management is enhanced through appropriate goals and discerning what is both important and urgent, versus important or urgent.
3.  Stress Management: In the face of increasing complexity, stress on the individual is inevitable.Most types of multi-tasking ultimately increase our stress, versus focusing on one thing at a time.
4.  Change Management: Effective change management involves creating periodic and concerted efforts to make sure that the volume and rate of change at work and at home doesn’t overwhelm or defeat you.
5.   Technology Management Effectively managing technology means that ensuring that technology serves you, instead of abuses you.
6.  Leisure Management: The most overlooked of the work-life balance supporting disciplines, leisure management allow the importance of rest and relaxation- that one can’t short-change leisure, which “time off” is an important component of the human experience.

Managers are important to employees seeking work-life balance. They create a work environment in which work balance is expected, enabled, and supported. They retain outstanding employees to whom work-life balance is important - like parents.
